PhD Studentship: Tribology of teeth cleaning

University of Southampton -National Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment

Ref:  EngSci-nCATS-109
Deadline: Applications will be accepted at any time until the position is filled.
This PhD in association with GSK will investigate multiple aspects of the application of abrasive particles to surfaces and evaluate their impact and performance on biological materials. The studentship will include modelling, measurement, and imaging of particle movement within delivery systems and measurement of surface effects of particles on biological tissues. Tests would consider the range of different particles available and the range of different methods of application and evaluation. The PhD would have the potential to further the understanding of how abrasive particles move within different physical environments and the opportunity to inform how best to deliver particles most effectively to a surface. The student would also liaise and collaborate with experts in appropriate related fields at other academic and industrial centres of excellence.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Professor Robert Wood nCATS research group, Email: r.wood@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 4881.
