PhD Studentship for International Students at Cranfield University in UK, 2014
Study
Subject (s): Studentship is awarded within the Department of Aerospace
Engineering. The objective of the research is to develop innovative
technologies which have the potential to be used in the next generations
of avionics and CNS/ATM system.
Course Level: This studentship is available for pursuing PhD research programme at Cranfield University in UK.
Post Doctoral Fellow (organic chemist and conductive polymer chemist) in the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore)
The Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield is pleased to announce the projects that are available for applicants wishing to start PhDs in October 2014.
We welcome applications from excellent students for a limited number of funded positions.
Research Topic:
Single-walled carbon nanotubes
are attractive as semiconducting materials for field effect transistors.
However, their practical application as semiconducting material is plagued by
the heterogeneity of the nanotubes. We are actively
pursuing different strategies to separate the metallic nanotubes
from the semiconducting nanotubes. We also make OLED
devices drivers.
(1) Organic Chemist
Job description: We are designing
and synthesizing chemical compounds that can select carbon nanotubes
based on metallicity.
Requirements: MSc /PHD in Organic
Synthesis. Good academic results for MSc applicants who are interested in PHD
studies. For postdoctoral fellow, good publication track record is required.
(2) Conductive Polymer Synthetic Chemist
Job Description: We are designing
and synthesizing conductive polymers for OLED.
Requirements: MSc /PHD in
Organic Polymer Synthesis. Good academic results for MSc applicants who are
interested in PHD studies. For postdoctoral fellow, good publication track
record is required.
Professor Mary Chan-Park
Dr Chan-Park is the
Leading Principal Investigator of a major Singapore government funded project
on Carbon Nanotube printed electronics. The Project has about 30 students/research
staff members working on various aspects of CNT printed electronics. We also
make OLED Driver Circuit with the CNT electronics.
Dr Chan-Park did her
PhD in polymers in MIT in 1993. She then did her postdoctoral fellow under the
sponsorship of Dow Corning (USA). She
worked for 10 years in industries in various technical management positions in
USA and Singapore. She was a senior technical manager in Sipix
Imaging (CA, USA) from 1999-2001. She then joined the Nanyang
Technological University (NTU) as Associate Professor in 2001. She is currently
also Associate Chair of the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering in
NTU.
Dr Chan-Park has a
vibrant research group with about 10 postdoctoral fellows/research staff and 10
PhD/Masters. Her current interests are in Printed Carbon Nanotubes
Electronics. She has published more than 100 peered review papers (in Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Chem Mat, Langmuir, Macromolecules, Applied Physics
Letters, Nanotechnology, etc). She has also got 15 patents and several patent
applications.

Information about the research
We are daily surrounded by solid foams as packaging materials, isolating materials, distributers of body liquids in health care products etc. Today these materials are based on fossil raw materials and there is a wish to replace them with renewable materials, like cellulose and hemicellulose. This is the focus in a newly started project, Smart Foam, founded by FORMAS. The project will be hosted by CHALMERS University of Technology and is a part of CHALMERS' Area of Advance – Materials Science.
In Smart Foams we will recruit one post doc and two PhD students. The post doc will focus on extract and substitute hemicellulose, one of the PhD students will focus on characterization of the extracted raw materials, the foaming properties and the solid foam products and the last PhD student will develop and optimize the extrusion techniques for producing the foams. In close collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (SIK) and Gothenburg University will other parallel parts of the research project investigate the environmental effects of our approach and to look into how one can transfer the gained knowledge to Swedish industry.
